Ten people were injured after a 19 year old student allegedly attacked people with a machete at a vocational school in Ostroleka, northeastern Poland, on Wednesday. Students barricaded themselves inside classrooms as police rushed to the school and emergency teams searched the area for possible explosives.

The injured included five students, two teachers and two bystanders, according to Masovian Regional Governor Mariusz Frankowski. The suspect was also injured after reportedly inflicting self harm.

Nine people were taken to hospital, but none of those injured was in life threatening condition, Frankowski told reporters.

The attack triggered a major emergency response at the school, with police, firefighters and bomb disposal specialists arriving at the scene. Investigators later found a homemade explosive device inside the suspect's backpack, adding another serious concern to an already chaotic situation.

Students Barricaded Classroom Doors During Attack

The attack took place at a vocational school for teenagers in Ostroleka at around 0900 GMT.

As the incident unfolded, students inside the building tried to protect themselves by barricading classroom doors. They remained inside until emergency crews could secure the school and begin evacuating them.

Adrian Stupski, a fire brigade spokesperson, told state broadcaster TVP Info that students had barricaded themselves inside classrooms in self defence before they were evacuated.

The decision gave emergency crews time to respond while students stayed away from the reported attacker.

For those inside the school, the danger was not immediately clear. Police were dealing with reports of a person armed with a machete, while students and teachers had to wait for authorities to establish control of the building.

The emergency response eventually allowed students to leave the school safely.

Police Arrest 19 Year Old Suspect

Police detained the suspect approximately 20 minutes after the attack.

Authorities later released a photograph on X showing a man who appeared to have been apprehended in a wooded area. The suspect was reportedly lying face down on the ground when police detained him.

Investigators identified him as a student at the school.

Police said he had attacked people with a machete. The suspect was also among those injured after allegedly inflicting self harm.

Authorities have not yet released details about what happened immediately before the attack or whether the suspect had previously displayed threatening behaviour.

The motive also remains unknown.

Investigators are now examining the suspect's movements, his actions before the attack and the circumstances inside the school to establish what led to the violence.

Homemade Explosive Device Found in Backpack

The discovery of a suspected homemade explosive device raised further concerns during the police operation.

Bomb disposal experts were called to the school after the device was found inside the suspect's backpack. National Prosecutor Dariusz Korneluk told TVN24 that the device had nearly detonated.

Authorities have not said exactly what the device was designed to do or whether the suspect intended to use it during the attack.

The discovery meant investigators had to consider more than the reported machete attack. Specialist bomb disposal teams were brought in to examine the device and make sure the area was safe.

The circumstances surrounding the device will likely form an important part of the investigation as prosecutors work to establish whether the attack was planned and how the suspect prepared for it.

Five Students and Two Teachers Injured

Five students were among those injured, along with two teachers and two bystanders.

The number of students involved made the incident particularly concerning for families in Ostroleka, where schools became the centre of an emergency operation.

Frankowski said nine injured people were taken to hospital. None was in life threatening condition.

The suspect was also injured, meaning the total number of people hurt in the incident reached 10.

Authorities did not report any deaths.

Emergency services continued working at the school while police secured the area and investigated the circumstances surrounding the attack.

Ostroleka Schools Closed After Attack

Authorities took additional measures across Ostroleka following the incident.

Katarzyna Ogniewska, a spokesperson for the town hall, said all schools in the town were closed and children were safe.

The decision affected schools beyond the vocational school where the attack occurred, reflecting the seriousness of the situation while police and emergency services continued their work.

Families were left waiting for information as authorities dealt with the immediate security threat and began investigating the suspect.

The closure also allowed officials to keep students away from areas where police operations were still underway.

Why Did the School Attack Happen?

The motive behind the attack remains unclear.

Police have confirmed that the suspect was a student at the school, but authorities have not publicly explained why he allegedly attacked other people.

Investigators will now examine his background and movements before the incident, along with the weapon and suspected explosive device found during the response.

They will also need to determine whether the attack was planned beforehand or whether events inside the school escalated unexpectedly.

At this stage, authorities have not publicly linked the attack to any political, ideological or other specific motive.

More information is expected as investigators question the suspect and examine evidence collected from the school and surrounding area.

School Attacks Remain Uncommon in Poland

Knife attacks at schools are relatively rare in Poland, but authorities have dealt with other cases involving young people suspected of planning violence.

In September, police detained a 13 year old suspected of planning an attack and found a knife in the child's bag.

That case involved an alleged plan rather than an attack in which multiple people were injured.

The Ostroleka incident is therefore likely to prompt renewed questions about school security, warning signs and how authorities can identify potential threats before they turn into violence.

For now, investigators are focused on determining exactly what happened inside the school and why.

The immediate facts are already clear. Ten people were injured, students had to barricade themselves inside classrooms, police detained a 19 year old student and investigators found a homemade explosive device in his backpack.

As authorities continue investigating the Poland school knife attack, the key question remains: what warning signs, if any, were missed before the violence began?
