Nichola Yuen Hang yiu and Pierre Ng Pang chi have produced one of the most productive trainer jockey partnerships of the early Hong Kong racing season, with four wins from just six rides together. The numbers are striking, but today’s five remaining engagements could offer a clearer indication of whether their remarkable run is beginning to attract more attention from the betting market.
Yuen has partnered six horses for Ng so far this season and has won four times. Five of those six runners finished fourth or better, giving the jockey an exceptional 66.7 percent winning strike rate with the stable.
The four victories also represent two thirds of Yuen’s total wins for the season. What makes the record even more notable is that the horses were not all obvious market choices.
The four winners returned starting prices of $5.75, $8.10, $14.10 and $5.80. One of those victories came at odds of more than $14, showing that the partnership has been able to produce results even when the market did not strongly favour its runners.
There is another way to measure just how far the combination has exceeded expectations. Across Yuen’s six rides for Ng, the betting market gave the horses a combined expectation of only 0.57 wins. Instead, they produced four.
That leaves the partnership 3.43 wins above its combined expected total.
Such a gap is almost impossible to maintain over a much larger sample. Racing rarely allows a strike rate of this level to continue indefinitely, particularly when the number of opportunities increases. That makes today’s card particularly interesting because the market now has more evidence to assess before the next five horses take their chances.
Yuen is booked for Good Fortune, Master Champion, Healthy Healthy, Drombeg Banner and Aerovolanic for Ng. Their performances should provide another useful measure of whether the partnership remains ahead of expectations or whether the results are beginning to move closer to what the betting market anticipated.

Crawford stable continues to produce clues
Brett Crawford has yet to record his first Hong Kong winner this season, with his runners currently sitting at 0 for 27. The headline figure, however, does not fully reflect how close several of his horses have come.
Crawford’s runners have already recorded three second place finishes, three thirds and two fourths from those 27 starts. Twelve of his runners, or 44.4 percent, have finished within three lengths of the winner.
Almost 30 percent of his runners have also managed to finish in the first four.
Those figures suggest that the stable has been capable of producing competitive performances even without converting them into a victory. The betting results add another layer to the picture.
Seven of those 12 horses that finished within three lengths of the winner started at fifth choice or worse in the betting. Six went off at double figure odds.
Glorious Dynasty was beaten by only 2¾ lengths despite starting at $75. Hero Rising finished fourth at $37, while Conghua Galaxy took third at $29. All Are Mine came within 1¼ lengths of victory at $11.
The stable came particularly close to ending the drought on Sunday when Galaxy Patch finished within a neck of victory.
For Crawford, the immediate challenge is straightforward. Competitive runs need to become wins. Yet the sequence of close finishes indicates that his runners should not simply be dismissed because the stable is still waiting for its first success.
Crawford has another six runners on today’s card, giving the second season trainer several opportunities to turn the growing number of near misses into his first winner.

Majestic Valour gets another chance with Shum
Danny Shum Chap shing will also be hoping a familiar pattern continues with Majestic Valour, a former Pierre Ng runner who has now moved to the Shum stable.
Two horses previously trained by Ng, Packing King and Packing Fighter, have improved sharply since joining Shum. Between them, they have produced four wins and a second from their first five starts for the stable, with Zac Purton aboard for each of those performances.
Packing King won his first two races for Shum. Packing Fighter has been just as impressive, finishing second before winning twice, with the latest success coming emphatically on Sunday.
Majestic Valour now has the opportunity to follow the same path.
The gelding made a strong start to his Hong Kong career, winning two of his first three starts. Both victories came over 1,200 metres at Sha Tin, with Purton in the saddle.
His form then began to fade. Four subsequent Class 3 appearances produced no further victories, and his results suggested that the horse had not been able to reproduce the level he showed during his early successes.
His most recent attempt also raised a question about distance.
Majestic Valour was stepped up to 1,400 metres and raced prominently, but he failed to finish the race strongly enough. The performance suggested that the extra 200 metres may have stretched his stamina.
That experiment will not be repeated today.
Majestic Valour returns to the 1,200 metres at Sha Tin, the same distance over which he recorded both of his Hong Kong victories. Purton also returns to the saddle, having ridden the horse three times for two wins.
The champion jockey has also partnered Majestic Valour in both trials since the horse transferred to Shum in July. That gives the partnership recent experience together and provides another reason to watch how the horse performs back at his preferred distance.
The three storylines come together on a card where market expectations will be worth following closely. Yuen and Ng have produced results far beyond their initial statistical expectation, Crawford’s runners have repeatedly threatened to break through despite their winless record, and Majestic Valour is being given another opportunity to rediscover the form that produced his first two victories.
The five Yuen and Ng runners, Crawford’s six chances and Majestic Valour’s return to 1,200 metres should provide plenty of evidence for punters and racing followers to examine.
Which of these runners will make the strongest statement on today’s card?
