Tram services along part of Hennessy Road were suspended for a second consecutive evening on Tuesday after a power failure disrupted operations, according to Hong Kong’s Transport Department.
The latest disruption began at 9.43pm and affected tram services travelling in both directions between Admiralty MTR station and Tonnochy Road. Eastbound trams were suspended between Admiralty station and Tonnochy Road, while westbound services were halted between Tonnochy Road and Admiralty station.
The interruption marked the second consecutive day in which a power related fault affected tram operations in the area, causing disruption for passengers travelling during the evening.
The Transport Department announced the suspension on Tuesday evening but did not provide further details on the cause of the power failure or how long the disruption was expected to last.
For passengers travelling through the affected section of Hennessy Road, the suspension meant that tram services could not operate normally along the route connecting Admiralty with Tonnochy Road. The affected stretch is part of one of Hong Kong Island’s heavily used tram corridors, where services run through busy commercial and residential areas.
The latest incident followed a separate disruption on Monday evening, when westbound tram services between North Point Terminus and Tin Lok Lane were suspended because of a power fault.
Monday’s interruption covered a different section of the tram network, while Tuesday’s suspension specifically affected services around Hennessy Road and the section between Admiralty and Tonnochy Road.
The recurrence of power related problems over two successive days made the disruptions notable for commuters, particularly those travelling during the evening. Although tram suspensions can be limited to a particular section of the route, they can affect passengers who depend on the service to make short journeys across Hong Kong Island.
The Transport Department’s announcement did not state whether the Monday and Tuesday incidents were connected. No information was provided indicating that the two power faults were caused by the same equipment or infrastructure problem.
Tram services form an important part of Hong Kong Island’s public transport network, linking neighbourhoods from Kennedy Town through Central and Wan Chai to Causeway Bay and North Point. Their frequent stops make them particularly useful for short distance journeys, while their routes run through some of the island’s busiest streets.
Hennessy Road is a major east west road through Wan Chai, with tram tracks running along the corridor. A suspension on part of the route can therefore affect passengers travelling between central districts and areas farther east.
The Tuesday disruption also came after evening travel had already been affected by the previous day’s fault. Passengers who encountered the suspension were advised to take account of the affected section when planning journeys.
The Transport Department did not announce any wider suspension of tram services beyond the section specified in its notice. The reported disruption was limited to eastbound services between Admiralty MTR station and Tonnochy Road and westbound services between Tonnochy Road and Admiralty MTR station.
The department’s announcement also did not give an estimated time for the restoration of normal service. The duration of a disruption caused by a power fault can depend on the location and nature of the failure, as well as the work required to restore the affected infrastructure.
For regular tram users, the incidents illustrate how a fault affecting electrical infrastructure can interrupt services even when the wider tram network remains operational. Because trams rely on an overhead electrical supply, a power problem affecting the relevant section can prevent vehicles from continuing through that area until the fault is addressed.
Hong Kong’s tram network has operated for more than a century and remains one of the city’s distinctive forms of public transport. Despite the growth of the MTR and extensive bus services, trams continue to carry passengers along Hong Kong Island’s northern corridor.
The two incidents reported on Monday and Tuesday were separate service interruptions, and the available information did not indicate whether further disruptions were expected.
